Large scale demonstrations of biological control based integrated pest management (BIPM) practices were carried out in the 'kole' lands of Koorkkencherry Panchayath of Thrissur district in Kerala and compared with conventional farming. Trichogramma japonicum was released against rice stem borer and leaf folder @ 1 lakh ha−1. The results showed that dead heart and white ear head incidences were on par in the two systems of cultivation. In the case of leaf folder significantly lower incidence was observed in BIPM. There was no significant difference in grain yield. The population of predators like coccinellids and spiders were significantly higher in BIPM.Keywords

The occurrence of Hirsutella thompsonii, the mite specific pathogen was confirmed and it was isolated from ten out of the twelve locations surveyed in Thrissur district of Kerala. Apart from the mite-specific pathogen, Hirsutella spp., other fungal pathogens such as Fusarium spp., Acremonium spp. and Paecilomyces spp. were isolated from the eriophyid mite infested coconut samples in the surveys conducted in Thrissur district, Kerala, during the period from July 2003 to June 2004. Natural occurrence of H. thompsonii contributed to 4.93 per cent. Acarifungal pathogens belonging to the genera Hirsutella, Fusarium, Acremonium and Paecilomyces were mostly isolated during the monsoon season and the actinomycetes during summer period in the entire four panchayaths. Pathogenicity to coconut eriophyid mite was proved for two species of Hirsutella, H. thompsonii and H. kirchnerii. The other non-specific fungi found to be pathogenic to mites were Acremonium strictum, A. incoloratum, Fusarium lateritium, F. verticillioides, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus and P. lilacinus. The wide spectrum of fungal pathogens associated with A. guerreronis indicates the significant role played by them in the natural suppression of the pest.Keywords

Blackheaded caterpillar, Opisina arenosella Walker is a major pest of coconut in India. Cardiastethus exiguus Poppius is a potential predator of eggs and newly hatched larvae of O. arenosella. Field release and evaluation of C. exiguus was carried out during summer months of 2003–04 and 2004–05 in two pest-infested areas of Kerala, The release rates were 50 and 100 nymphs/adults per tree in the crown region. Totally three releases were made. There was significant reduction in the population of O.arenosella after release of the predator. The two release rates (50 and 100 nos./tree) were found equally effective in reducing the population of O. arenosella.Keywords

The chitin synthesis inhibitors, buprofezln and diflubenzuron were tested for their safety in comparison with the Insecticides viz., phosalone (0.08%), triazophos (0.08%), monocrotophos (0.07%) and endosulfan (0.07%) against Encarsia shafeel Hayat, a parasite of Bemisia tabaci Genn. Buprofezln and diflubenzuron were safe to the adult parasites even at a high dose of 0.1%. When the parasite larvae were exposed to the treatments, buprofezln suppressed the adult emergence at high concentrations of 0.05 and 0.1 %. Invariably, all the Insecticides were toxic to the larvae and adults of parasite. Considering the extent of toxicity to adult parasites, phosalone was less toxic than the other insecticides. Against Immature stage of the parasite, endosulfan, phosalone and monoerotophos were equally toxic. Triazophos was highly detrimental to both adult as well as Immature stages of the parasite.
